2016 Legislative Summit


Registration is closed for the Partnership for Montana’s Future and Montana Budget and Policy Center’s 2016 Legislative Summit to be held December 14-15 in Helena. There is no cost to attend.

The first day will focus on state tribal policy and advocacy. This day will bring together native advocates, leaders, elected and appointed officials to share policy goals and strategies. The second day will unite policy experts, community leaders, advocates, and legislators to collaborate and learn about the state budget, key policy priorities for 2017, and create a network for the legislative session.  


The summit will be at the Great Northern Hotel, 835 Great Northern Blvd. Helena, MT 59601.


Day 1 – Taking a Seat at the Table: Strategies for Leaders from Indian Country

Leaders from Indian Country will come together to discuss tactics and strategies that are effective for making progressive policy a reality for American Indians in Montana.

  • Provide workshops that will increase involvement of leaders from Indian Country in the Montana Legislative Sessions.
  • Facilitate discussions about inter-tribal budget policy priorities for 2017 legislative session.
  • Provide a space for leaders from Indian Country to meet advocates from nonprofit organizations and learn about ways these groups can support progressive changes in tribal communities.

Who should attend: state and tribal officials, tribal advocates, tribal program directors, young leaders, educators, students, and others from Indian Country who are interested in learning more about becoming active in the state legislative process.

Evening Reception

To bridge day one and day two of the summit, we will host an evening reception featuring Dr. Avis Jones-DeWeever. This event will take place on December 14th, at 6:30 pm at the Great Northern Hotel in Helena. Those who cannot make a full day of the summit, should consider registering for the evening reception. 

Day 2 –  Winning Together: Advocacy for the 2017 Legislative Session

National and state experts, influential state leaders, elected officials, and experienced policy analysts and advocates offering their insights and expertise.

  • Discussions of key tax, budget, health care, education, conservation, labor, and other issues at the forefront of Montana.
  • Sessions to coordinate work during the session to build a strong economy, fight poverty, and reduce inequality.
  • Workshops to build skills and learn from one another.
  • Opportunities to network and share lessons and strategy with colleagues from around the state.

Who should attend: participants from Day 1, legislators, progressive advocates, policy analysts, friends, and others who want to learn more about issues regarding the budget, tax, health care, labor, education, and conservation, and learn how coordinate with partners on these critical issues in the 2017 Legislative Session.
